What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected into the skin containing hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring compound found in the skin tissue that gives your skin structure and hydrates and plumps the skin. Dermal fillers can address various concerns such as hollow cheeks, thin lips, lines and wrinkles, and enhancing facial contours. You’ll normally see immediate results which can last for over a year, depending on the area or filler used and every patient’s lifestyle factors.
Are dermal fillers safe?
When administered by a qualified and experienced medical professional at sk:n, dermal fillers are considered to be safe. That’s because our experts understand the complexities of facial anatomy and have thorough training to safely and effectively treat all areas with a number of techniques. We’ll also never prescribe a treatment that we don’t believe is in the patient’s best interests and are happy to refuse treatments if unsuitable, so we pride ourselves on providing ethical treatment.
As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. Common side effects may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site, which typically subside within a few days. We’re also best placed to respond effectively in case of any issues, which luckily is incredibly rare at sk:n
At sk:n, we use Juvéderm® dermal fillers, the world’s leading* brand of hyaluronic acid facial fillers.
*Based on HCP tracking market research involving over 1,700 HCPs from 16 international markets.

Dermal fillers can be used to treat many areas of the face and address a range of concerns. Common areas treated:
- Lips: Filler can enhance lip volume, define the lip borders, and improve lip asymmetry.
- Cheeks: Lost volume in the mid-face can be restored, and can also help improve the contour and definition of the cheekbones.
- Nasolabial folds: These lines can be filled to soften and smooth their appearance.
- Marionette lines: Dermal fillers can be injected into the nose to chin lines to minimise their appearance.
- Tear troughs: The hollows or dark circles under the eyes can be treated for a less tired-looking appearance.
- Jawline and chin: Dermal fillers can enhance or replace lost volume in the jawline and chin, creating a more balanced facial profile.
It’s important to consult with a qualified medical professional who can assess your concerns and determine the most appropriate filler treatment. Your treatment will always be tailored to you and your desired outcome.

Frequently asked questions about dermal fillers
Dermal fillers are usually priced by the syringe or the area, with a single 1ml starting from £199 . Your treatment plan costs will be confirmed during your consultation with a doctor or nurse prescriber.
The sensation experienced during dermal filler injections can vary, and some individuals may feel mild discomfort or a slight stinging sensation during the procedure. At sk:n we use dermal fillers that contain a numbing agent called lidocaine, which helps to minimise any discomfort .
We can also apply a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the area for before treatment. We usually apply numbing cream before lip filler if required, which you can discuss during your consultation.
The discomfort associated with dermal filler injections is generally temporary and brief. There is usually minimal downtime and the only tell-tale signs of treatment could be mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites. The side effects usually subside within a few hours or days.
We do not offer permanent fillers, due to the unknown long-term risks involved.
How long dermal fillers last can vary depending on several factors, including the product used, the treatment area, patient metabolism and lifestyle factors. In general, Juvéderm®, dermal fillers are known for their longevity compared to some other fillers on the market.
Juvéderm®, fillers typically last between 6 months and 2 years. . Thicker formulations of Juvéderm®, such as those used for deep facial folds or volume restoration, tend to last longer than the thinner consistency gels used for fine lines or lip enhancement.
Our injectors will provide a more accurate estimate of how long the results of fillers will likely to last in each patient’s case.
We understand the importance of creating a supportive environment at your consultation where you can openly discuss your goals, concerns and explore your options. We’re dedicated to giving guidance and delivering the right care tailored to your unique needs.
During your consultation, your medical injector will:
- Discuss your desired results and determine the best treatment options to help you achieve them.
- Your medical history will be thoroughly reviewed to ensure a safe and bespoke approach
- Give a clear explanation of the procedure, including information about recovery, expected outcomes, and associated costs.
- Address any questions or concerns you may have, ensuring that you feel fully informed and confident about your treatment journey.
If you are deemed to be a suitable candidate during the consultation, you can proceed with dermal filler treatment immediately afterward, subject to appointment availability.
Your consultation with sk:n will only be with an aesthetic doctor or nurse prescriber, and will go into detail to ensure you have clarity regarding dermal fillers to avoid any unexpected results.t. During treatment we’ll aslo keep you updated with your progress and we’ll also show you a mirror throughout the process.
You’ll be informed that some swelling and bruising may occur after treatment, so we’ll allow sufficient time for these effects to subside before a review to assess the need for further adjustments if you are unsure aboutyour results after this time. If this is the case, we can make further tweaks after your initial treatment. It’s important to note that achieving your desired goals safely may require multiple sessions, as our injectors prefer a gradual approach to avoid overfilling or if it’s your first time experiencing dermal fillers.. Overfilling can lead to migration which looks unnatural and may need reversing or dissolving.
In the rare event of an urgent medical issue, our medical injectors are qualified to administer hyaluronidase, which can dissolve the dermal filler. However, it’s essential to consider that hyaluronidase also affects your body’s natural hyaluronic acid levels, so its use is reserved for emergencies and not solely for dissatisfaction with results.
A vial can contain either 0.55ml or 1ml of dermal filler , and the amount of dermal filler needed for your treatment can vary depending on several factors, including the area treated, the desired outcome, and how much each individual will actually need such as the natural facial structure or how much facial or lip volume has been lost.
Our medical injectors will assess your needs and provide a personalised treatment plan. This will determine the appropriate amount of dermal filler required to achieve your goals effectively and safely, but they may adjust during treatment depending on how easily your desired results can be achieved over a period of time.
For context, 1ml of filler only equals approximately 1/5th of a teaspoon, so it’s only a tiny amount and you may require more (or even less) than you initially thought.
Dermal fillers can be used to enhance and rejuvenate various areas of the face . The most common areas for dermal filler include:
- Cheeks
- Marionette lines
- Nasolabial folds, or nose to mouth lines
- Smokers lines
- Lips
- Tear troughs
- Jawline
- Chin
- Temples

We’ll never perform any extreme treatments, and we specialise in enhancing your natural beauty, and we’ll refuse any treatment that we deem unsafe or unnecessary.
We take pride in building subtle results for our patients over time to maintain the safety and integrity of each treatment, while giving a realistic assessment of what can be achieved with dermal fillers.

Jowls are the sagging skin and loss of definition along the jawline, which can occur as a result of ageing, genetics or lifestyle. Dermal fillers can be used to help reduce the appearance of jowls to some extent, but not entirely.
To help reduce the appearance of jowls using dermal fillers, fillers are injected in the jawline can provide support and definition, which will help to an extent. By also adding volume to the cheeks or chin, for example, dermal fillers can help to lift the skin, improve the overall facial balance and reduce the appearance of jowls.
However, it’s important to note that the effectiveness of dermal fillers in lifting jowls can depend on factors such as the severity, the quality of the skin, and facial anatomy. In some cases, a combination approach that includes dermal fillers alongside other treatments like thread lifts, skin tightening or surgical intervention may be recommended to improve the appearance of jowls.
There are lots of dermal filler brands on the market, but at sk:n we only use the most trusted semi-permanent fillers from Juvéderm®, the world’s leading* brand of hyaluronic acid facial fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring compound found in the body tissue that gives the skin structure and helps maintain moisture and volume in the skin. The hyaluronic acid used in Juvéderm® fillers is a synthetic cross-linked formulation, designed to mimic the hyaluronic acid naturally produced by the body, making it biocompatible and safe for use in dermal filler treatments. Juvéderm® fillers are known for their smooth consistency and ability to add volume, enhance facial contours, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds.
