What is skin tightening?

Your body naturally produces collagen and elastin proteins, which give the skin its plumpness, strength, structure and elasticity. As we get older, the production of these proteins slow, causing the skin to slowly wrinkle, lose volume and elasticity. Other external factors such as excessive sun exposure or damage, weight fluctuations, alcohol and smoking, stress and pollution, your skin may become looser and sag over time.

Enhanced skin tightening treatments kick the production of elastin and collagen in the dermis, the deeper layer of skin. Many skin tightening treatments, including those at sk:n, are a combination of radiofrequency (RF) and microneedling or ultrasound technologies. Microneedling punctures the skin to cause tiny “injuries” to initiate a wound healing response, while radiofrequency energy causes inflammation of the tissue – both triggering the body’s natural healing process and collagen and elastin production, to tighten and remodel skin at a cellular level.

After a course of treatment, you’ll start to notice an improvement to the structure of the skin, a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, an improvement to scarring, and sagging skin will feel tighter

Ultraformer

Ultraformer III is a non-invasive micro-focused ultrasound (MFU) technology that causes dermal micro-coagulation that lifts and tightens the skin without the need for surgery, and very little downtime. Almost any part of the face and body can be treated, and can even target pockets of stubborn fat. The average Ultraformer treatment is around 20- 30 minutes, and you may only need one treatment per year as your skin will continue to improve over the course of 9 months.

Promax

Promax Lipo is a highly powerful combination of three leading technologies in one machine to target fat cells and lax skin:

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. The small needles create micro-lesions which trigger your body’s natural healing process, and RF delivers energy deep into the dermis to inflame tissue and initiate collagen and elastin production. The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles will be reduced, uneven skin texture appears smoother and stretch marks can be reduced. You’ll need around three sessions, 4-6 weeks apart, with annual top-ups as recommended.

Other skin tightening procedures

Microneedling is a great minimally invasive treatment for plumping, smoothing and firming the skin and is offered at sk:n clinics nationwide, although RF plus microneedling will deliver better results from a non-surgical tightening procedure. A more intensive treatment but with more downtime, laser resurfacing delivers the most impressive anti-ageing results.

Skin tightening skin care

The benefit of non-surgical skin tightening procedures is that there is very little to no downtime afterwards – your skin may feel sensitive and tight, and you may be red for a few hours afterwards. Your doctor or practitioner will advise you on how to look after your skin and maintain the results of your treatment.

Drink plenty of water before and after treatment
Avoid drinking alcohol 24-72 hours afterwards
Avoid hot showers or baths 24 hours after
Depending on the procedure, the skin may have puncture wounds. They will heal quickly but we recommend not applying makeup or skincare for at least 24 hours. You can apply SPF if recommended by your practitioner
Avoid skincare that includes ingredients that could irritate the skin while it heals, such as retinol and acids, for a few days after your procedure

Frequently asked questions

Is skin tightening painful?

Skin tightening is generally not considered painful, and it depends on the treatment and each person’s tolerance. Most people do not find skin tightening painful, instead experiencing heat, sensitivity, tingling and redness afterwards. In most cases for the deeper treatments, we can offer a topical anaesthetic.

How will my skin look after skin tightening?

Immediately afterwards, you may appear red or flushed, much like you would if you have sunburn. Your skin may also feel tight, sensitive and in some cases, slightly sore. These are temporary side effects that usually subside within 24 hours. We may offer soothing gel afterwards, depending on the treatment, but we usually recommend avoiding applying makeup for 24 hours to reduce the possibility of irritating the skin.

The effects will improve over a few weeks after treatment, and you’ll see the best results if you book a course of around 3, with treatment every 4-6 weeks, as recommended by your practitioner.

How many skin tightening treatments will I need?

Depending on the procedure and the area treated, most patients will need between 3 and 6 treatments every 4-6 weeks, but the number and frequency will be recommended in your consultation. If you choose Ultraformer III, you may only need 1 treatment per year.

Your skin will start to show improvement a few weeks after your first treatment, with results getting better over time. For the best results, we always recommend a course of treatment.

How long does a skin tightening treatment take?

The procedure can take anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the technology and the area treated. If you are recommended numbing cream, we will book in enough time for the anaesthetic to set in (usually around half an hour).
