What causes acne scarring?
Scarring develops as a complication of acne. Any type of acne can lead to scarring, but it’s more common with inflammatory acne, often presenting as deep nodules and cysts. If acne breakouts happen deep within the skin, it will result in tissue damage. The body will then work hard to heal these wounds, which triggers collagen production. If too little or too much collagen is produced, you’ll see scarring. You can also be at increased risk of scarring if spots are picked, so it’s very important to avoid doing this.
Types of acne scarring:
- Ice pick scars – small, deep holes in the surface of your skin that look like puncture wounds
- Rolling scars – caused by bands of scar tissue that form under the skin, giving the surface of the skin an uneven or rolling appearance
- Boxcar scars – round or oval craters in the skin
What is the best treatment for acne scars?
There are a range of acne scar treatments available at sk:n, depending on the type and severity of your scarring. If you have severe scarring, you’ll need a consultation with a doctor as you may need a more intensive treatment such as laser resurfacing or subcision. If your scarring isn’t as severe, a nurse or senior practitioner will be able to treat you. During your consultation, we may recommend a course of microneedling, laser resurfacing such as Fraxel® or CO2RE, or you may need subcision, a minor surgical treatment.
Will acne scars heal?
Some scars may improve slightly on their own depending on the severity, and some scarring will be more difficult to reduce or remove than others. Dark spots found on the skin after your acne has cleared (usually red, brown or purple) are very common and aren’t true acne scars. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which are much easier to treat than deeper scars and might heal over time. Other acne scars can be permanent if left untreated.

Frequently asked questions
Is acne scarring treatment right for me?
The acne scarring treatments we offer are effective for most people. If there are any issues with your suitability for treatment, a doctor or nurse will talk this through during your consultation and will discuss alternatives.
I still have active acne. Can I start acne scarring treatment?
No, you will have to wait to begin your acne scarring treatment until your acne is not active, and your skin is relatively clear. Having treatment could irritate your acne which can often be painful and leave your skin feeling sensitive.
How long will the results last?
In most cases the results will be permanent. However if you suffer from acne again after having acne scarring treatment, there is a risk that new scars will form and you will require further treatment.
How long does it take for acne scars to go away?
Before we can answer that, it’s important to determine the type of scarring you have, which we will do in your consultation. It is essential we wait until your skin is almost clear of acne to begin treatment. As an example, many of our clients see great results from microneedling where a course of 3 is required at monthly intervals, so you may be looking at a minimum of 3 months to see any substantial results. With laser resurfacing, many clients experience amazing results after just 1 treatment.
Does acne scarring treatment hurt?
During most laser or microneedling/dermapen treatments, there can be very mild discomfort, but we can apply topical anaesthetic cream if necessary. As laser resurfacing removes the epidermis, the thin top layer of the skin, to encourage collagen production, this can cause some discomfort. However we do use numbing cream on the area to minimise any discomfort.
