Laser Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove any hair with laser hair removal?
Yes – as long as the hair is dark enough and therefore has enough pigment to attract the laser. Laser hair removal can remove hair on the face, under arms, bikini line, back, chest, neck, hands, legs and feet.
Can men have laser hair removal for excessive hair growth?
Yes. Men can have laser hair removal for unwanted hair, or excessive hair growth caused by a condition called hypertrichosis. This can affect males and females, but is very rare. Laser hair removal works equally well across the entire body and the face. From unwanted cheek hair, to an entire back, chest or stomach, laser hair removal gives long lasting and effective results.
Does It Matter Where I Go For Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
The highly trained practitioners at sk:n will always provide effective laser hair removal treatment tailored to your skin type.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The laser works by permanently damaging and destroying targeted hair follicles, preventing regrowth. The laser emits light energy which is absorbed by the melanin in the hair. This targets the hair roots beneath the skin at specific stages of their growth cycles, damaging the bulb and preventing regrowth, a process called photothermolysis. This is why we recommend at least 8 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to ensure all follicles are targeted at the right time.
How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?
Clients can see a permanent result of up to 90% reduction in hair growth. Results are dependent on hair type and colour and permanent hair reduction that lasts can be achieved.
Is Laser Hair Removal Expensive?
Compared to the cost of a lifetime’s shaving or waxing, laser hair removal sessions are great value for money. It’s also important to remember that cheaper Laser Hair Removal doesn’t always mean better or safe.
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Our treatments are very gentle and virtually pain-free. Some of our patients compare the sensation to the flick of an elastic band.
Is laser hair removal right for me?
If you’re looking to remove hair from all over or certain areas of your body and your hair is dark enough, yes. Laser hair removal is safe for all skin types and colours, so it’s suitable for most people looking for more permanent, smooth results. As the laser is attracted to the pigment of the hair follicle, the only consideration is whether your unwanted hair has enough pigment to be treated. Most of our clients see permanent hair reduction of up to 90%, but these results are dependent on hair type and colour. Your practitioner will discuss this with you during your free consultation.
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?
Absolutely, laser hair removal is safe. The laser targets only the hair follicle, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. You may experience some redness, but this should subside within 24 hours.
Is Laser Hair Removal Unsafe?
Laser hair removal at sk:n is never unsafe. Our Medical Standards Team set out strict protocols and audit our clinics every month to make sure we follow every procedure correctly.
Is Laser Hair Removal Unsuitable For Darker Skin?
Laser hair treatment is fine for any skin type or colour, as long as your hairs are dark enough to attract the laser.
What If My Skin Is Not Its Natural Colour?
Got a tan? Had a skin reaction to something? No problem, it’s just really important that you let us know, as this can make a difference when it comes to providing the best treatment.
What results will I get with laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is approved to deliver permanent hair reduction of up to 90%. You can expect to see your best results after a course of 8-12, after which the hair will have reduced dramatically and the skin is silky-smooth. Some clients, however, may need top ups depending on their hormonal changes over time.
Will Laser Hair Removal Feel The Same Every Time?
As you have more sessions, we target fewer and fewer follicles – so you’ll feel the laser less each time.
Will Treatment Make My Skin Sore?
Our treatments will never harm your skin. There may be a little redness, but this will fade within 24 hours.

How Permanent Is Laser Hair Removal?
In a sample of over 10,000 treatments, the average hair reduction after 12 treatments was 68 – 74%. A minimum of 8 treatments is required.
Hair growth has many factors and hormones play a big part in hair growth, so top up treatments to maintain the reduction may be required but it is worth it to keep the skin smooth and the hair reduce and slow growing- especially if you suffer from ingrown hairs.
Is It Better To Wax Or Have Laser Hair Removal?
Waxing regularly and over long periods of time can cause damage such as darkening and lightening of the skin (hyper and hypo pigmentation) in grown hairs which can lead to scarring. With laser hair removal as it permanently reduces the thickness of the hairs and isn’t abrasive to the skin it doesn’t have any detrimental effects to the skins tone and texture and as after a course of treatments the hair is reduces in thickness darkness and amount the regularity of removing the hair is massively reduced and can help the skin return near to normal condition.
Can You Get Cancer From Laser Hair Removal?
No – Cancer is caused by UV spectrum of light- ultra violet light which irradiates the cell’s DNA causing irregular growth changes which can cause cancerous growths . Laser hair removal uses the red spectrum of light- specifically infra-red which is only absorbed by the dark pigment in your hair called melanin. This cause no changes to your skin cells and is very safe.
