If you suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), one of the most common symptoms is hirsutism, or excessive hair growth, when hair can grow on the face, neck, chest, back, buttocks or tummy. How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal uses brief pulses of light energy to damage or destroy the root of each individual hair follicle, which restricts the ability to regrow. This process is called photothermolysis. The hair follicle must be targeted at a specific time during its growth cycle (the anagen phase) to prevent the hair from returning.
Which areas can be treated?

What are the symptoms of PCOS?
The most common symptoms of PCOS include excessive hair growth or thinning hair, irregular or missed periods, weight gain and acne. At sk:n we have a wide range of treatments to help with the symptoms of PCOS, from laser hair removal to acne and acne scarring treatment.
Why does PCOS cause excessive hair growth?
The presence of high levels of male hormones (androgens) associated with PCOS can lead to excessive hair growth on the face and body. Hirsutism can hugely dent someone’s confidence and be difficult to manage, with some women suffering from anxiety and depression as a result. Regular waxing and shaving can cause the delicate skin on the face to become sore and sensitive, some experience ingrown hairs, and can even cause hyperpigmentation.
What is hirsutism?
Hirsutism is excessive hair growth and is caused by the production of androgens hormones, such as testosterone. The most common cause of hirsutism is PCOS but it can also be caused by medicines, anabolic steroids, or other hormonal conditions. Find out more on the NHS website.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Laser hair removal is commonly described as feeling like the flick of an elastic band on your skin. Everyone’s threshold for pain is different, however the majority of people find laser hair removal completely manageable and the discomfort should stop as soon as the treatment stops. During treatment, we also blast a beam of cold air onto the area to cool the skin and counteract discomfort.
How long does laser hair removal last?
Clients can see up to 90% permanent reduction in hair growth after a course of treatments but the percentage of hair reduction depends on hair type and colour. Due to the hair growth cycle you may need a top up of 3 sessions within a few years, however many patients never need treatment again.
Is laser hair removal safe?
Yes, laser hair removal is completely safe. Our medical-grade lasers target only the hair follicle which ensures the surrounding skin is unharmed. You may experience some redness, but this should subside within 24 hours.
Is laser hair removal suitable for darker skin?
Laser hair treatment is suitable for any skin type or colour, as long as your hairs are dark enough to attract the laser. We use Nd:YAG lasers for darker skin tones.
What are the alternatives to laser hair removal?
Home hair removal methods include shaving, waxing, bleaching, plucking, or hair removal creams. Unfortunately, none of these options are long-lasting and the hair will return quickly. Professional waxing treatments can last longer, however, this can become quite costly as well as time-consuming as you usually have to repeat the treatment every 2-4 weeks. Unlike IPL (intense pulsed light), laser hair removal is suitable for dark skin tones and hard-to-reach areas, and unlike electrolysis it can be used to remove hair all over the body, with the ability to target large areas at one time.
Why do I need a course of treatment?
Hair grows in four phases: the anagen phase, the catagen phase, the telogen phase and the exogen phase. To prevent re-growth, the hair follicle must be targeted during the anagen phase, which is the only part of the growth cycle that the hair follicle is attached to the bulb. Individual hairs will most likely be in different parts of the hair growth cycle at any one time, that’s why a course of treatment is required. Your practitioner will discuss this with you during your initial consultation, but as a guide we usually recommend around 8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart (depending on the area to be treated).
